Announcing IPR SXSW18:
This winter we are offering our version of study abroad "The South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conference & Festivals celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW® is the premier destination for discovery."
We will offer both a film festival (section IPR1) and a music festival (section IPR2) version of the course. The two section will meet together for class, but will travel at slightly different times to align with the festival dates. DVMP and SDVM will want to get a film badge, while APE and LSSP students will want to go with the music. MEB students can decide from themselves. A film badge does serve as a (secondary) pass to music events, and a music badge works the same for music events.
This is a great time, a once in a lifetime experience. Ask any of the students who went last year... There are some blog posts available on the 2017 IPR SXSW facebook group's page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/iprsxsw2017/
Here are some things to keep in mind:
-This class counts as a specialized elective and is three credits
-The trip takes place every year, so if you are earlier in your program, you still have time, but you are absolutely welcome to take the class this winter.
-There is an additional fee for the class that covers your badges (approx. $1500 value), airfare, hotel ,and transportation to and from the airport. Last year that fee was $2500. I expect it to be the same this year.
-You are responsible for food and transportation while at the festival. We stay within walking distance of most activities and the best and least expensive way to travel around is via bicycle or by walking. There are tons of rentable bikes - like our green bikes that you see around Minneapolis.
-The film festival portion of the class will travel from Friday the 9th to Friday the 16th, so you will miss the final week of classes and will have to arrange with your instructors to turn in projects and take finals early. Some students took finals from Austin via Campus Connect last year.
-The music festival portion of this class will travel between Sunday March 11 through Sunday March 18. Again, you will miss the final week of classes and will have to arrange with your instructors to turn in projects and take finals early
